There are four varieties of Belgian Shepherds

 

  1. Groenendael: long haired and black
  2. Tervueren: long haired fawn or grey with a black overlay and black mask. The preferred colour is fawn with a black overlay.
  3. Malinois: short fawn coat with black overlay and a black mask.
  4. Laekenois: rough or wire haired fawn coat with black overlay and a black mask.

Belgian Shepherds are intelligent, agile and active dogs. It's a large and strong, but also elegant and graceful dog. Comes in several coats and colors . They are loyal and devoted to their owner. Belgian Shepherds are traditionally herding dogs but are now used for agility, advanced obedience, carting, tracking and schutzhund or similar canine activity. They are attentive and sensitive, and learn quickly when positively motivated. They can lern and do almost anything. They are versatile working dogs. In performance activities they thrives on work. The Belgian Shepherds are watchful and observant, with strong protective instincts.

Belgian Shepherds has high activity level. They are frequently in motion, moving in circles. They need socializacion, otherwise they can get aggressive or fearfulness toward strangers. They can get destructive when bored or not exercised enough. They are strong strong willed with a mind of thair own, requiring a confident owner who can take charge.

Belgian Shepherds were never intended to be simply household pets. Belgian Shepherds must have regular opportunities to vent their energy and to use their minds to do something interesting. Many Belgian Shepherds are dominant or aggressive toward other dogs of the same sex. Its very different how Belgians are with children. Its depends on the character each dog have and how the owner learned the dog and the child to behave to one enother.

Belgian Shepherds are heavy shedding. They loose coat once or twice a year, at that time they really shed a lot. In that time they need much grooming . You'll find hair and fur all over your clothing, carpeting, under your furniture.

Some Belgians have eye problems, hip problems and epilepsy.
